Historic Downtown Mall, A Charlottesville Favorite
There's a reason that Charlottesville's Downtown Mall has been called the town's "public living room." A pedestrian mall
, it boasts more than 120 shops, 30 restaurants, several theaters, and musical venues.
In short, it's a good reflection of Charlottesville's diversity! Considered one of the finest urban parks in the country, tourists and locals alike love it.
That's why the Inn at Monticello
encourages guests to visit this well-loved community attraction, often considered the heart of C'ville.
On any given night of the year, you'll find locals, students, and tourists strolling along on the historic brick streets, enjoying its vibrant atmosphere. From street performers to art galleries, the mall is full of all kinds of activity.
How the Downtown Mall Came To Be
Stretching 8 blocks, the idea of a walking mall began with the Charlottesville Chamber of Commerce in 1959. But it wasn't until 1974 when the City hired Lawrence Halprin, a pioneering landscape architect, to act on the vision.
Wisely, Halprin included trees as part of the walking landscape, which also reflects Charlottesville's commitment to the environment.
There are also two historic theaters
, which allow our guests ample opportunity to enjoy all kinds of shows. There's also an ice skating rink, free concerts, "Art Walks
," and a Saturday farmer's market. That doesn't include the numerous restaurants, galleries, gelato and ice cream shops, and retail shops.
Incredibly, most of the retail stores on the mall are locally owned, not chain stores.
Amidst all of this activity, you would expect the mall to have a "hurried" feeling, but nothing could be further from the truth! That's why we, at the Inn at Monticello, like to send guests there. It has a leisurely pace!
And that's the beauty of it.
When you visit Charlottesville, you'll have plenty to see and do. We hope you'll make the Historic Downtown Mall a relaxing must. Book your stay
